English & Math Placement Tests

What is the purpose of the placement tests?

The purpose is to help you succeed in learning English and mathematics. The placement tests do this in two ways:
  • They measure your current skill levels in these subjects.
  • They determine which math and English courses you should take so you will be best prepared to learn.

Why is there a need for a placement test?

Adult students in particular have diverse backgrounds in mathematics and English. The placement tests help you find the appropriate course. They provide UMUC Asia and you with the information needed to help ensure that you have the best possible math/English learning experience.

What the placement tests are NOT:

They are not aptitude tests.
The math test measures developed mathematical reasoning and skills. The English test measures reading comprehension and sentence-writing skills.

They are not tests for college credit.

They are not admissions tests.
They are used for placement only.

They are not grade predictors.
The tests determine your skills levels at the time the tests are administered. Once you are placed in a course, many factors affect your performance: class attendance, time spent on homework, and motivation.

They are not comprehensive final exams.
The math test does cover a broad area--Introductory algebra to calculus--in a short time. The English test covers reading and writing at the sentence level.
